ChatGPT Ads Is Evolving Into a More Mature Advertising System: How Could Automated Bidding and Platform Targeting Intensify OpenAI’s Competition With Google Ads and Meta Ads?
OpenAI is taking another step toward building a more comprehensive advertising platform. ChatGPT Ads is adding capabilities such as Automated Bidding, Platform Targeting, and View-through Conversion Measurement, giving advertisers greater control over how campaigns are managed and how their performance is measured.
One of the most important additions is the Maximize Results bidding strategy. With this approach, ChatGPT Ads can automatically adjust bids in an effort to generate more desired outcomes within an advertiser’s specified budget.
This follows a broader direction that Google Ads and Meta Ads have pursued for years: less manual intervention in bidding and greater reliance on algorithms for campaign optimization.
Another significant addition is Platform Targeting. Advertisers can choose whether campaigns are shown on iOS, Android, or the Web. This can be particularly valuable for brands whose customers behave differently across devices and platforms.
ChatGPT Ads is also introducing View-through Conversion Measurement, which can help marketers measure conversions that occur after a user has seen an ad without immediately clicking on it.
Together, these developments suggest that ChatGPT Ads is gradually moving beyond a basic ad-placement system toward becoming a performance advertising platform.
However, one of ChatGPT’s most important potential differences from Google and Meta is the context in which advertising appears.
On Google, ads typically reach users while they are searching for a specific term, product, or topic. On Meta, ads largely reach people through environments such as feeds, Stories, and Reels. ChatGPT, by contrast, operates within conversations where users may be asking questions, comparing alternatives, evaluating products, and approaching a decision.
That environment could create a new form of intent-based advertising for brands.
But does this mean ChatGPT Ads is already a serious competitor to Google Ads and Meta Ads?
The evidence is not strong enough to make that conclusion yet.
Google and Meta have spent years building enormous advertising ecosystems supported by data, bidding systems, targeting capabilities, attribution tools, measurement infrastructure, and large advertiser bases. ChatGPT Ads remains relatively new by comparison.
To determine whether it can genuinely compete at the same level, marketers will need stronger evidence on metrics such as reach, conversion rates, cost per acquisition, ROAS, and advertiser adoption.
Still, the direction is increasingly clear. OpenAI is gradually building the tools required to transform ChatGPT from a place where people simply receive answers into a new marketing and advertising channel.
The competition, therefore, may no longer be only about who captures the customer’s attention. Increasingly, it may also be about who is present at the moment the customer makes a decision.
