Apple Maps is entering the digital advertising market; a new door for Local Marketing opens and competition with Google Maps intensifies
Apple has officially launched the "Ads on Apple Maps" service, and with this step, Apple Maps is transitioning from a map and navigation tool into a new digital advertising platform. In the current phase, this service is available for businesses in the US and Canada.
The new system allows local businesses to reach customers exactly when they are actively searching for a location, product, or service. Ads can appear at the top of relevant search results or in the "Suggested Places" section.
Apple says that the ad placement is determined automatically based on the business type and what the user is searching for.
This step is crucial for Local Marketing, as Apple states that over one billion business-related searches are conducted on Apple Maps monthly, and nearly one in every two searches for a business leads to a user action. This means the advertiser can reach the customer at a time very close to their purchase or visit decision.
For example, if a user searches for a restaurant, cafe, hotel, or local service on Apple Maps, an advertising business can appear in a more prominent position within the results. Apple also allows businesses to add photos, promotional messages, and set their campaign budgets.
Regarding data privacy, there is an important distinction: Apple says "Personalized Ads" are not supported on Apple Maps, and the Maps ads are contextual. Meaning, this service should not simply be viewed as a "behavioral targeting" system. This is part of Apple's effort to balance advertising with its privacy protection policy.
From a marketing perspective, Apple Maps is now creating a new channel for Paid Local Search. This is especially important for restaurants, retail stores, hotels, and local service businesses, as they can show ads to customers at the exact moment they need a place or service.
However, calling this an "equal fight with Google Maps" is still premature. The fact is that Apple has opened a new Local Ads channel; the implication is that if the service expands to more countries and advertisers adopt it widely, it could increase pressure on Google's position in Local Search and Local Advertising.
