Paramount Pushes to Make 30-Film Theatrical Commitment Legally Binding
Studio Backs 30 Annual Cinema Releases and a Minimum 45-Day Theatrical Window
Paramount is strengthening its commitment to theatrical distribution as it continues efforts to complete its proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery.
The company has pledged that a combined Paramount and Warner Bros. would release at least 30 films in cinemas every year — 15 from each studio. Every film would receive a full theatrical release with a minimum 45-day exclusive cinema window before moving into later distribution windows.
Paramount has now proposed making that commitment legally binding, according to comments highlighted as the company faces continuing U.S. opposition to the Warner Bros. Discovery deal. Supporters of the merger point to the pledge as evidence that the combined company intends to maintain significant investment in theatrical filmmaking rather than reduce cinema output.
Why It Matters for Film Distribution
The plan is significant for the wider film distribution industry because it reinforces the role of cinemas as the first major release window for studio films.
A guaranteed 45-day theatrical period means films would remain exclusive to cinemas before becoming available through paid digital services and, later, streaming platforms. Paramount has said theatrical releases also provide an important pipeline for later licensing and streaming monetization.
For exhibitors, distributors and filmmakers, a commitment to 30 annual releases could provide a more consistent supply of theatrical content at a time when streaming has transformed traditional release strategies.
The Bigger Picture
The proposed $110 billion Paramount–Warner Bros. Discovery transaction has already received UK regulatory clearance, but it continues to face a U.S. antitrust challenge, with a federal trial scheduled for March 2027.
If the acquisition is completed and Paramount follows through with its theatrical commitments, the combined studios could become one of the world's largest suppliers of films for cinemas while continuing to use streaming and licensing as later stages of each title's distribution cycle.
