Sony Pictures Takes ‘Ramayana’ Worldwide Outside India
International Distribution Deal Expands the Indian Epic’s Global Theatrical Reach
Sony Pictures has joined Prime Focus Studios to handle the international theatrical distribution of Ramayana outside India, strengthening the film’s plans for a large-scale global release.
The partnership gives the highly anticipated Indian production access to Sony Pictures’ established international distribution network across major theatrical markets.
Within India, Dharma Productions will lead distribution across Hindi-speaking markets in North India, giving the film a territory-based release structure that combines domestic market expertise with an international studio partner.
‘Ramayana’ Targets a Global Audience
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios, Ramayana is being developed as a two-part cinematic franchise in association with DNEG and Monster Mind Creations.
The film stars Ranbir Kapoor, Yash and Sai Pallavi, while internationally recognized composers Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman are collaborating on the music.
The production is also being prepared for release in multiple languages, including English, underlining its ambition to reach audiences beyond the traditional Indian theatrical market.
The first film is currently expected to begin its worldwide theatrical rollout around Diwali 2026.
A Territory-Based Distribution Strategy
The Sony Pictures agreement provides a clear example of how major films can structure distribution differently across international territories.
Rather than appointing a single distributor for every market, Ramayana is combining:
Prime Focus Studios — production and overall franchise strategy
Dharma Productions — key theatrical distribution within India
Sony Pictures — international theatrical distribution outside India
This type of structure allows producers to work with partners that already understand local audiences, cinema networks, marketing requirements and release strategies in their respective territories.
Why the Deal Matters for Film Distribution
For producers and rights holders, Ramayana demonstrates how a locally rooted production can be positioned as a global theatrical property through the right distribution partnerships.
International theatrical distribution involves much more than placing a film in cinemas. Distributors must consider localization, language versions, marketing, release dates, cinema bookings and audience positioning in each territory.
Sony Pictures’ involvement gives Ramayana access to an established global infrastructure capable of supporting those requirements across multiple markets.
Indian Cinema Continues Expanding Globally
Indian productions are increasingly being developed with international audiences in mind, supported by wider theatrical releases, multilingual versions and partnerships with global distributors.
Ramayana represents one of the clearest examples of that strategy: a culturally specific story being packaged and distributed as an international cinematic event.
For filmmakers and rights holders, the deal reinforces a central principle of modern film distribution — the right combination of local and international partners can significantly expand a film’s commercial reach.
As global audiences become increasingly open to films from different languages and markets, strategic international distribution is becoming an essential part of turning regional productions into worldwide releases.
