Casting News: Sons of Anarchy Reunion, Task Season 2 Expands and Nicholas Hoult Joins Harry Potter
Published: August 20, 2026
Meta Description: Three major international casting updates: Charlie Hunnam reunites the Sons of Anarchy cast for FX’s Legends, HBO expands the cast of Task Season 2, and Nicholas Hoult joins Harry Potter as Gilderoy Lockhart.
Major television productions are continuing to build high-profile ensembles for upcoming seasons and new projects. This week brings three important casting developments from FX and HBO, including a major Sons of Anarchy reunion, new additions to Task Season 2 and an important new role in HBO’s Harry Potter series.
1. Charlie Hunnam Reunites the Sons of Anarchy Cast for FX’s Legends
Is Charlie Hunnam returning to Sons of Anarchy?
Charlie Hunnam is reuniting with several members of the original Sons of Anarchy cast for a new FX limited series called Legends. However, this is not a traditional revival, and Hunnam is not returning to play Jax Teller.
Instead, Hunnam, Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates and Theo Rossi will play fictionalized versions of themselves.
The story begins when the former Sons of Anarchy cast reunites at a fan convention more than a decade after the original show ended. Their reunion takes a dangerous turn when the boundary between their fictional television world and real life begins to disappear.
Hunnam developed the project and will also star and executive produce. Additional casting is expected to be announced as development continues.
Why does this casting news matter?
Legends shows how established television ensembles can return in completely new formats instead of simply rebooting their original characters. It also creates a new production around a globally recognized cast, meaning further supporting and guest roles may become part of the project as production develops.
There is currently no confirmed public open casting call for Legends in the sources reviewed, so actors should be careful with unofficial audition advertisements.

2. HBO’s Task Season 2 Builds a Much Bigger Cast
Who is joining Task Season 2?
HBO is moving forward with a second season of Task, the crime drama created by Mare of Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby.
Mark Ruffalo will return as FBI agent Tom Brandis. HBO officially renewed the drama after its first season became one of the network's fastest-growing debut seasons.
Season 2 is also building a strong new ensemble around Ruffalo. Oscar winner Mahershala Ali joins the story as Eddie Barnes, a respected DEA agent whose team comes into conflict with Brandis' task force.
Recent additions include Tim Blake Nelson, Jharrel Jerome, Brían F. O'Byrne, Bethlehem Million, Kevin Dunn and Andrew Russel. Tim Blake Nelson will play Denny Coughlin, a veteran police officer recruited into Brandis' new task force, while Jharrel Jerome plays Jordan Barnes, the son of Mahershala Ali's character.
The season will also create a connection with Mare of Easttown. Julianne Nicholson is returning as Lori Ross, the character she previously played in the acclaimed HBO drama. Harry Melling and Edgar Ramírez are also among the performers joining the new season.
Why does this casting news matter?
Task Season 2 is becoming a much larger ensemble production. Rather than repeating the first season's story, HBO is bringing established characters together with a new group of actors and expanding the world created by Brad Ingelsby.
For performers, productions like Task are also important because a larger ensemble usually requires many supporting performers, day players, background actors and locally cast roles during production.
The series previously held an open casting search in the Philadelphia area for Latino performers aged 18 and over who speak both English and Spanish. That specific casting call had a May 15, 2026 deadline and is no longer open.

3. Nicholas Hoult Cast as Gilderoy Lockhart in HBO’s Harry Potter Season 2
Who will play Gilderoy Lockhart in the new Harry Potter series?
British actor Nicholas Hoult has been cast as Gilderoy Lockhart in the second season of HBO’s new Harry Potter television series.
The casting was confirmed in August 2026. Hoult will make his first appearance during Season 2, which is expected to adapt Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
Gilderoy Lockhart is the famous but highly self-confident wizard who becomes Hogwarts' new Defence Against the Dark Arts professor. Kenneth Branagh previously played the character in the 2002 film adaptation.
Season 2 is expected to begin filming in autumn 2026, even as the first season prepares for its December 2026 premiere.
Hoult joins an expanding cast that already includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Hagrid.
Why does this casting news matter?
HBO is already making major casting decisions for the second season before the first season has premiered. This suggests a long-term production and casting strategy designed to introduce important characters as each Harry Potter book is adapted.
For the casting industry, the project is especially interesting because every new season introduces additional students, professors, families and supporting characters. That means the casting process for the Harry Potter television universe is likely to continue evolving over several years, although no general public casting opportunity for these newly announced roles is currently confirmed.
