Two major Hollywood productions have announced notable casting updates this week. HBO’s The Last of Us has added three actors for its upcoming third season, while Sony Pictures’ Fred Astaire biopic has expanded its ensemble around Tom Holland with Sabrina Carpenter and Margaret Qualley.
‘The Last of Us’ Adds John Goodman, Laura Bailey and Ian Alexander for Season 3
HBO’s The Last of Us is expanding its cast ahead of Season 3 with John Goodman, Laura Bailey and Ian Alexander.
Goodman has been cast as Joey, while Alexander will portray Paco. The two characters are described as a friendly pair who call themselves the “Heroes of the Highway.” Bailey will play Elizabeth, one of the leaders of the Seraphites.
The casting also creates an interesting connection between HBO’s television adaptation and the original video games. Laura Bailey voiced Abby in The Last of Us Part II, while Ian Alexander played Lev in the game. They will now appear in different roles in the live-action series.
Why it matters for casting
Bringing performers from the original game into new live-action roles shows how adaptations can create opportunities for actors already connected to a franchise while still allowing them to portray completely different characters.

Sabrina Carpenter and Margaret Qualley Join Tom Holland’s Fred Astaire Biopic
Sony Pictures’ upcoming Fred Astaire biopic has added Sabrina Carpenter and Margaret Qualley alongside Tom Holland.
Holland is set to portray legendary actor and dancer Fred Astaire, with Qualley playing his older sister and early dancing partner Adele Astaire. Carpenter has been cast as Ginger Rogers, Astaire’s famous Hollywood screen and dance partner.
The film will be directed by Paul King, known for Paddington and Wonka. The screenplay is based on Kathleen Riley’s book The Astaires: Fred & Adele, and the story is expected to explore the professional partnership between Fred and Adele before Astaire became one of Hollywood’s most recognizable musical-film performers.
For Carpenter, the project also represents a return to a major acting role after several years in which her music career has been her primary focus.
Why it matters for casting
The project highlights how acting, singing and dance skills can overlap in major film casting. Holland, Qualley and Carpenter all bring performance experience beyond traditional screen acting, which is particularly relevant for a film centered on famous dancers.
