Netflix has expanded the casts of two upcoming drama projects, with Amy Ryan joining Emilia Jones in The Retrievals and a major international ensemble confirmed for the new mystery-noir series Outback.

The announcements bring together actors from the United States, South Korea and the Korean-American screen industry, highlighting Netflix’s continued investment in both true-story drama and internationally focused productions.

Oscar-nominated actress Amy Ryan has joined Netflix’s upcoming drama series The Retrievals opposite Emilia Jones.

Ryan will play Carla Russo, a veteran nurse at the Yale Fertility Center who pleaded guilty to diverting fentanyl and replacing or diluting the medication with saline. As a result, patients undergoing egg-retrieval procedures experienced severe pain without the expected pain medication.

Emilia Jones will play Gabby Clemente, one of the patients affected by the incident who becomes a central figure in the legal fight against Yale University.

The series is inspired by Susan Burton’s Peabody Award-winning New York Times podcast The Retrievals.

Maid and Sirens creator Molly Smith Metzler serves as writer and showrunner. Lila Neugebauer will direct the pilot and also executive produce.

The project also marks an important career milestone for Ryan: despite her extensive television work, The Retrievals will be her first series-regular television role.

Ryan is known for productions including The Office, The Wire, Only Murders in the Building, Sugar and Gone Baby Gone, which earned her an Academy Award nomination.

Hong Kyung as Zion, who travels to Australia following the sudden death of his sister and becomes determined to discover what happened to her.

HOYEON as Smiley, an unpredictable livestream creator.

Won Ji-an as Si-young, Zion’s sister, whose death sets the entire mystery in motion.

Justin H. Min as Scott, a Korean-Australian police officer who becomes part of the unfolding investigation.

The story follows Zion after he receives news of his sister’s sudden death and travels to Australia. Once there, questions surrounding her death push him deeper into an investigation for the truth.

The series is based on the webtoon G’Day but will expand and reinterpret its characters, relationships and backstories for television.

Han Jun-hee, known for D.P. and the Weak Hero franchise, serves as creator and executive producer. Jeon Du-gwan will direct, while Park Hyun-woo and Han Jun-hee are credited with the screenplay.

Netflix has confirmed that the series will be released globally on the platform, although a premiere date has not yet been announced.
