‘HOPE’ Secures Distribution in 200+ Markets as Global Theatrical Rollout Begins
Na Hong-jin’s Korean sci-fi thriller sets a Korean film pre-sales record and moves into cinemas worldwide through a network of major international distributors
South Korean filmmaker Na Hong-jin’s HOPE has entered its international theatrical rollout after securing distribution in more than 200 countries and territories, setting what sales company Plus M Entertainment describes as the highest overseas pre-sales record for a Korean film.
The international campaign follows the film’s Cannes Competition premiere and successful domestic release, demonstrating how a major Korean production can build global theatrical reach through multiple regional distribution partners.
A Distribution Network Across More Than 200 Territories
Rather than relying on one distributor worldwide, HOPE has been sold to established companies across individual regions.
NEON controls North American and English-speaking rights, while MUBI acquired the film for Latin America, Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Turkey.
Focus Features and UPI France secured France, Benelux and South Africa, while Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions acquired rights for Portugal, Scandinavia, Iceland, Israel and the Middle East.
The film has also secured distribution partners across Asia, including Gaga in Japan, Cai Chang in Taiwan, Golden Scene in Hong Kong, Pioneer in the Philippines, Star Entertainment in India, CGV Vietnam and Clover Films in Singapore.
This territory-by-territory structure allows local distributors to control theatrical marketing and release strategies according to the needs of their individual markets.
Global Theatrical Rollout Begins
HOPE opened in Taiwan on September 4, 2026, followed by its North American theatrical launch on September 9.
Additional releases are being rolled out across markets including Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, Latin America, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Hong Kong, Japan, Vietnam and Singapore.
For North America, NEON also used premium theatrical formats to position the film as an event release. Early-access screenings were held on September 7 across 175 premium large-format cinemas, including Dolby Cinema, 4DX, ScreenX, Barco HDR, D-BOX and Dolby Atmos.
The film is scheduled to open across the UK and Ireland on September 25, with NEON handling the theatrical release directly.
Strong Performance in South Korea
Before expanding internationally, HOPE opened in South Korea on July 15, 2026.
According to the Korean Film Council, the film had reached approximately 4.56 million admissions and $36.3 million in box-office revenue by September 11.
The sci-fi action thriller stars Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, Hoyeon, Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Taylor Russell and Cameron Britton.
Why It Matters for Film Distribution
The international rollout of HOPE is significant not only because of the number of territories involved, but because of how the distribution strategy was assembled.
Its model combines festival exposure, international pre-sales, regional distribution partnerships, premium-format screenings and staggered theatrical releases.
Securing more than 200 territories before completing the global theatrical rollout gives the production international market commitments early while allowing experienced distributors to adapt the film’s release to individual regions.
For the wider film business, HOPE demonstrates the continuing international demand for ambitious non-English-language productions and the role that festivals, pre-sales and strong territorial partnerships can play in building a worldwide theatrical release.
