OpenAI Tests a New Ad Format: Clicking on Ads Becomes the Start of a Direct, Two-Way Conversation with Brands' AI Inside ChatGPT
OpenAI has taken a new step in the advertising market by testing a new format called "Sponsored Agents," which aims to fundamentally change the nature of the relationship between advertisers and buyers.
In traditional digital advertising, when a user clicks on an ad, they are directly taken to the brand's website or app. However, through Sponsored Agents, a user can, after seeing an ad, directly start a private conversation with a sponsored AI agent representing that brand within the ChatGPT environment.
For example, if a user sees an ad for a dining table, instead of going directly to the seller's website, they can ask the brand's AI: "What is the size of the table?", "How many people does it seat?", or "How should it be maintained?". After receiving the answers and feeling ready for the next step, they can navigate to the seller's main website to complete the purchase via a link provided by the AI.
OpenAI emphasizes that this type of conversation will be clearly marked as "Sponsored" and completely separated from ChatGPT's independent answers and the user's main conversation, in order to maintain transparency.
At the same time, the company is expanding the use of AI for marketing professionals themselves. An advertiser can ask ChatGPT, using natural everyday language, to create, edit, or analyze the results of an ad campaign. Additionally, the Ads Manager will be equipped with new tools for editing ad copy and automatic translation.
Furthermore, OpenAI will connect ChatGPT ads with major platforms like HubSpot and Shopify. The goal of this integration is to enable business owners to incorporate their ads into the tools they already use for marketing, Customer Relationship Management (CRM), and e-commerce. It is worth noting that this new feature (Sponsored Agents) is still in the testing phase and is currently only available to a select number of advertisers in the United States.
This innovation transforms advertising from a one-way message into a two-way conversation. Until now, the main goal of most digital ads was simply to grab attention and secure a click. But in this new model, the click is not the end of the advertising process; rather, it becomes the starting point of an interactive conversation between the buyer and the business's AI.
If this model is successful and expanded, it will consolidate the entire buyer journey—from the moment they see the ad, through asking questions and comparing options, all the way to making a purchasing decision—into a single, exceptional conversational experience.
