The competition among brands to capture customer attention during the year-end holiday season is entering a new phase. According to a new 2026 study by the Yahoo DSP platform, more than half of retail marketers plan to significantly increase their advertising budgets, with most aiming to launch their campaigns well ahead of the market rush. Data shows that 55% of retail marketers are boosting their ad budgets, marking a notable rise compared to 44% last year. Concurrently, 57% of advertising agencies and 54% of overall marketers share similar plans to expand their spending. The major shift is not solely in spending volume, but also in timing. The study revealed that 77% of advertisers expect their holiday campaigns to be live by November, with the highest concentration of launches occurring in October (34%). This indicates that brands are no longer waiting for events like Black Friday and Cyber Monday to establish their initial connection with consumers. Instead, they aim to introduce their products earlier and secure a place in the buyer's mind. For instance, an electronics brand might showcase its new mobile phones in October, allowing customers to make their comparisons. Then, once the discount season begins, the brand can retarget those same interested consumers with special promotional offers. This push for earlier campaigns is a direct response to shifting consumer behavior. Yahoo's June 2026 data demonstrated that 24% of shoppers began their holiday shopping as early as the summer (compared to 13% the previous year). If a consumer starts researching in the summer and early fall, a brand that waits until late November to appear will undoubtedly miss a golden opportunity. Furthermore, there is a growing emphasis on Connected TV (CTV) advertising. 58% of advertisers plan to increase their budgets for this channel this year (up from 45% in 2025), driven by the fact that 62% of users acknowledge that ads on streaming platforms and television directly influence their purchasing decisions. This has made streaming ads an integral part of customer outreach strategies, even though accurately measuring their direct impact on actual purchases remains an ongoing challenge. The key takeaway for marketers from these trends is that the battle for the consumer is no longer just about who offers the steepest discounts on Black Friday. Rather, it is about who can earn the customer's attention and trust earliest. The year-end shopping season now begins months before the actual sales, making early brand awareness and familiarity the true battleground.
