A New Era in Advertising; Runway Automates the Creative Process, Allowing AI to Learn from Data to Produce More Successful Campaigns
Until now, Artificial Intelligence (AI) in marketing has mostly been used as a tool for writing copy or generating images and videos. However, Runway aims to push this boundary by introducing its new platform, "Runway Ads". The platform is an AI system built to manage the entire creative process in Performance Marketing campaigns from start to finish; meaning the AI creates the ad, publishes it, measures its results, and then produces newer, better versions based on those results.
The system works by first having brands connect their ad accounts on Meta, Google, and TikTok to the platform and providing their Brand Kit. Then, the system leverages past ads, product images, and brand guidelines to generate dozens of new video and image variations. For example, instead of repeating one successful video ad, the system creates dozens of different variations by altering the Hook, Audience, Format, and Call to Action, while simultaneously resizing the videos according to where they will be published. Another capability is Localization; meaning if a campaign is run across multiple countries, the system automatically adapts on-screen text, product images, and voiceovers for different markets without deviating from the brand's voice guidelines.
The most fascinating phase of the platform begins after human approval of the ads. The system directly pushes the ads to the platforms and then retrieves the performance data. From here, a continuous loop begins (Create, Approve, Publish, Measure, Learn, and Create New Version). If the system notices that a specific type of video has better spend efficiency, it builds the next cycle of ads based on what achieved the most success. Runway tested this infrastructure for its own campaigns on Meta and TikTok and reported that in a short period, its weekly ad volume increased from 77 to nearly 900, Return on Ad Spend (ROAS) doubled, and Cost per Subscriber dropped by 41%.
This development fundamentally changes the work of Creative Teams. Instead of the team manually creating dozens of variations, resizing, and translating—which requires significant time and cost—they simply define the strategy and brand boundaries, handing over the creation and testing tasks to Agentic AI. Although the final decision remains in human hands and Human Approval is available, the biggest takeaway from this news is: AI is no longer just a content generator; it is learning which ad types are successful and automatically scaling up the winning versions.
