AI Music Labeling Initiative Gains Support from Leading Music Industry Organizations
New Initiative Aims to Increase Transparency Around AI-Generated Music
Several of the world's leading music organizations have announced their support for a new initiative that introduces standardized labeling for music created using artificial intelligence (AI).
The proposal has received backing from organizations including the IFPI, RIAA, A2IM, WIN, IMPALA, The Recording Academy (Grammy Awards), and SAG-AFTRA.
The initiative is designed to help digital music platforms, distributors, rights holders, artists, and listeners better understand how artificial intelligence has been used in the creation of a recording.
As a company based in the Kurdistan Region, Art City continues to expand its international partnerships while promoting Kurdish creative industries worldwide. Developments like this demonstrate how global music standards continue to evolve alongside emerging technologies.
Two New AI Music Labels
Under the proposed system, music releases can be identified using two different categories at the track level:
- Fully AI-Generated Music: This label is intended for recordings created entirely through artificial intelligence, where AI generates the musical content without human performance being the primary creative source.
- AI-Assisted Music: This category applies to music created with the assistance of AI while still involving human creativity. AI may have been used during songwriting, composition, production, editing, mastering, or other stages of the creative process.
The distinction helps separate music that is entirely machine-generated from music where AI functions as a creative tool alongside artists and producers.
Why AI Labeling Matters
Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly common throughout the music production process.
Artists may use AI to generate ideas, remove noise from recordings, assist with mixing, create instrumental arrangements, or experiment with new sounds. At the same time, entirely AI-generated songs have become easier to produce and distribute.
Without clear labeling, listeners and music services may not know how a track was created.
The proposed labeling system introduces greater transparency while allowing artists to continue exploring AI-powered creative tools.
Benefits for Streaming Platforms and Distributors
If widely adopted, standardized AI labels could help digital music platforms and distributors:
- Provide greater transparency for listeners
- Improve metadata consistency
- Distinguish between fully AI-generated and AI-assisted recordings
- Support future reporting and catalog management
- Help rights holders describe how AI was used during production
For music distributors, standardized metadata may also simplify platform workflows as AI-generated content becomes more common.
What This Could Mean for Artists
The initiative does not prohibit the use of AI in music production. Instead, it encourages transparency by allowing artists to disclose whether AI played a supporting role or whether a recording was created entirely through artificial intelligence.
Many artists already use AI-powered tools for editing, restoration, mastering, and creative experimentation. Under the proposed system, those recordings could be identified differently from tracks generated entirely by AI.
Why This Matters for the Music Industry
The music industry has spent decades developing standards for identifying recordings, songwriters, publishers, rights holders, and recordings through systems such as ISRC and other metadata standards.
As AI becomes part of modern music production, the industry is now beginning to establish similar standards for describing the role artificial intelligence plays in creating music.
Clear metadata can benefit creators, distributors, streaming platforms, collecting societies, and listeners alike by improving transparency across the digital music ecosystem.
Art City's Perspective
As AI continues to influence music production, metadata and transparency are becoming increasingly important.
For companies involved in music distribution and rights management, accurate metadata helps ensure that recordings are properly identified throughout the digital supply chain.
As a company based in the Kurdistan Region, Art City follows international developments in digital music distribution and metadata standards while supporting Kurdish artists and rights holders in bringing their music to audiences around the world.
